In Defense of Valentine's Day

Because what the world needs now is love sweet love (I promise this piece isn't that cheesy... I just HAD to make that the subhead)

When I tell people Valentine’s Day is my favorite holiday, I am usually met with the same response: “I hate Valentine’s Day! It’s just a money grab for Hallmark!! I want flowers on a random Tuesday, not because of a holiday.”

I am here to tell you why you should reconsider this and start embracing the holiday.

Valentine’s Day has always been my favorite holiday. As a child, I would always have a Valentine’s Day sleepover. My mom and I would make a heart-shaped brownie cake. Then my friends would come over, and we’d do crafts, watch movies, and eat chocolate until we fell asleep.

I restarted this tradition last year. My friends come over, we eat a ton of desserts, and we make friendship bracelets and valentines. This year, my roommate and I did a joint Groundhog’s Day/Valentine’s Day party because they are each our favorite holiday (I love being an adult because you can do silly things like this, and our amazing friends won’t bat an eye). Now, these parties are NOT Galentine’s Day parties. I’m very pro-Parks and Recreation but anti-Galentine’s because I believe Valentine’s Day should encapsulate all the love in your life—not just romantic love.
